Usability

Patient Encounter List | Discharge Plan Screen

Usability project entailed revamping an online help system that contains 2000+ topics.

In this example, the user is trying to add information to a patient’s discharge plan. The workflow for users in this application is the Patient Encounter List.

Security Management Consulting
Patient's Encounter List (before)

Issues:
  • Too much material for users to read through when trying to complete the task at hand
  • There is nothing on this screen that tells the user how to get to the discharge plan from here
  • Users have to figure out they need to click a link under Related Topics called Managing a Discharge Plan
  • Links take users to a new screen so the main topic gets lost
Resolution:

Security Management Consulting
Patient's Encounter List (after)
  • Made help task oriented
  • Reduced the number of user clicks necessary to get information for the task at hand
  • Incorporated icons from the application into the help topics
  • Listed instructions on how to get to another screen
  • Used more white space to improve readability and scanning
  • Made links pop-ups so the user can preview other topics without leaving the main screen
  • Incorporated most frequently asked questions
From here, the user is looking for information on how to access the Discharge Plan screen so the patient’s discharge plan can be updated. Discharge Plan Screen >
